I once contributed my raw computing power (and the computing power of 4 other computers in my house) to whatever purpose distributed.net put it. Largely, they are interested in breaking encryption using brute force means as part of contests.
I was also once a member of SETI@Home. It looks like that SETI@Home has not only improved it’s technology, performing higher quality analysis of the signals they receive, but also has also begun to expand beyond merely looking for an artificial signal of extra-terrestrial origin.
Going through old files and deleting stuff I no longer need, I came across these links from back in 2000.
